Pockets Full of Adventure

Postby Nicephorus » Sat Nov 02, 2013 6:05 pm

I just submitted my entry, Pockets Full of Adventure. A pocket scientist has problems, adventurers must dive into his pockets to get his stuff back.

I really like the PocketMod format. It gives me an excuse to be brief. I'm tempted to write a 2nd PocketMod to go with the game to flesh out world creation. I think you could also create something like the How to Host a Murder party games, where everyone has a different PocketMod that tells them how to play, who they are, and what they know.

I think I managed to not only keep numbers out of the mechanics but to keep all numbers and number words out of the writing. I had to do things like bullet point instead of numbered lists. I wrote to use however many cards you feel like so I didn't have to give a number how many.

I kept a brief log through the day over at NPR:

The submssion isn't up yet. You can also download it from here.

A surprisingly proper context for the sentence "Now is the time to get into Keeton’s pants"!! Also, "Now you’re ready for action in any dimension".
An operating table is now an altar.

How did you create your pocketmod? I'm struggling to figure out how to do it, and the pocketmod site is no help at all. I can see a finished product being folded, but am having trouble getting the text where I want it.

I wrote an 8 page Word document at 20 point font - a bit bigger font would be better. Then I converted to a pdf - some word processor software has a save to pdf option or if you have a pdf print driver installed, you can just print and choose pdf as the output.

If you go to http://www.pocketmod.com/ on the right is a link to download PDF to PocketMod converter. It's a simple program that takes a file up to 8 pages and converts it into a pocketmod, shrinking the pages and putting them in the proper place - in the original, the title is page 1 and the character sheet is page 8 but the converter puts them next to each other so that they wind up on the front and back where they are supposed to be. The convert is dirt simple, a button to upload and a button to convert and save a file. On one machine, the old pdf print driver I had was not compatible with the converter if I had images. If you run into a conversion problem, try creating the pdf a different way.

Using the PDFtoPocketMod converter mentioned above, I write my games in Open Office and export to PDF/A-1a.
I tend to use font sizes of 36-40 in the original document.
When all you have is a gun that fires windows, every problem looks defenestratable.

I design my pocketmods at the actual area of one of the 8 pocketmod "pages" (2.75 inches by 4.5 inches) using layout software, export to PDF, and then run it through the PDF to Pocketmod software mentioned above.

A general RPG blog with a few maps.

Thanks for the PocketMod crash course, being struggling with it myself.

Now, about the game: it's awesome! I played it with my group yesterday, everyone loved it.

It was really easy to learn and to play. It was the first time a friend of mine DMed, but the system disappeared on the background, not bothering us with weird rules while letting the action flow.

It's worth to give this a try.
