Online gaming gubbins

Postby catty_big » Tue Dec 17, 2013 3:39 pm

Perhaps you tech-savvy folks can hep me? I want to start online gaming and am preparing to buy myself a headset (just in case the mike on my laptop and cheapo 'in-ear' earphones I got from Argos don't work (they probably do, but I like wasting money on equipment I don't need ;)). I had a look online, and found . Now, several of them say 'for [insert name of game console here]'. Does this mean I can only use them with an Xbox or PS3 or whatever, and not to do online gaming, or does it mean the converse, that I can't use for this purpose the ones that don't say 'for xbox' etc.?

Thanks!

I have a pair of Koss SB/49 Inline speaker headphones. I got them after trying my friend's pair for two weeks. He is quite loyal to the company due to their generous lifetime warranty. At least one other friend has also acquired a pair and is happy with them. Its fairly comfortable, good sound, inline volume control, and a decently sensitive microphone.

Not owning a console, I don't know about their audio outputs. I think the new X-Bone/PS4 have proprietary hook-ups rather than 3.5mm headphone jacks, but I thought the older ones were on the usual standard.

My best advice is to go to an electronics store first so you can a feel for how big or heavy the things are. If you can actually try on a pair for a few min - even better. Its hard to judge how it fits by just looking at a picture on NewEgg.com.
Games of imagination are never truly done. Yet tomorrow we shall start another one.

my new RPG blog.

Most importantly - what are the hook-ups for your device? Is it a single jack or are the headphones & mic split?

If they are split, I can heartily recommend the "" from Logitech. My set is from 2003 (got it from Unreal Tournament box set) and still works great.

If it is a single jack, check your device to see how many "bands" are needed on the jack (the black lines that separate the metal parts of the connection). For a single-jack connection, it would usually have 4 bands.

CA has it right, though. Your local electronics store should have what you need.
When all you have is a gun that fires windows, every problem looks defenestratable.
