Diffrent Type of RPG

Postby Chainsaw Aardvark » Tue Apr 22, 2014 5:54 pm

I'm playing around with the ability to do some other things online. Part one is doing some Let's Play style videos of a few video games. Rather than natter on about other stuff while playing, I'm doing it in character (like the Freeman's Mind series, but not as rapid fire).

The first video for the Fallout series is here:

Feedback about how to improve it would be welcome. I'm not at a point of buying any software, so I'm using the to record.

Once I'm a bit better with the editing and used to the interface, I'm thinking of doing some online RPG sessions via hangouts and a program like roll20.net/rpgtools. Kikoskia has a good prototype () of the audio only type, and Whycaliber makes use of the programs I'm looking at ().

Headed off to bed now, so I'll have to check this out later and I'll comment.

Looks good so far. You're really quiet, though, which makes it somewhat hard to follow.

Thanks for the critique.

I was worried about that. I don't project very well, and don't know enough about editing to isolate the voice track by itself. Turning up the mike ends up with a lot of wheezing.

That was cool, CA. Some feedback from me...

I agree that it's a bit quiet. I understand many people use (free!) to record the sound and then play with the levels at the end.

The difficult bit with LP are the commentaries. Keeping them interesting and at the same time keeping talking appears to be really, really hard. People doing LP do sound like they have some kind of talking problem! *insert faintly racist joke about Americans here* Don't ever say something is boring! ;-) I laughed quite hard in the 2nd video when you going toe to toe with the scorpion and kept missing! ;-)

Resolution was good, the length of the video was just right. On the second video, you need to do a quick "Welcome back" as some people might land on the second one to begin with. Also, do a quick sign off at the end of each. It isn't a problem if a viewer is watching the I take this mostly from my favourite LP channel: .

To add to that, I'm rather inspired to make my own...

Good job putting RP back into RPGs! I really appreciate you uncanny approach to character generation and the fact that you are not bringing meta information into gameplay.

My overall problem with Let's Play-type videos is that I don't have the time and/or patience to sit through long ones, especially if the game includes tedious parts like travelling or long fights. Luckily, your eleven-minute episodes are a treat to watch, though sometimes I admit to skipping forward.

Are there any LP videos done in a "digest" format? Ezekiel laying down after a hard day of fighting radscorps and thinking it all through his mind... so you end up with an edited, more "cinematic" and dynamic video, which gives you the highlights and the funniest moments of your game.

Instead of showing how you fend of ten rats in a row, you can do a montage and set it to "Eye of the Tiger"!! (or, as it is Fallout, some great survival jazz tune from the !)

If I didn't have a laptop that has interesting crashes with OBP and DirectX, I would be using it myself to do a few Let's Plays. In particular, I'm thinking about showing off a modded (for a 5-10 hour speedrun) Dungeon Siege 2 just so that people can hear about it, because to my knowledge only fans of the first really played it and not all that many of them liked it enough to comment on it.

The first few rats were fine, editing out the rest and skipping through walking around would allow moving on to the next thing. I don't really know how these things usually play out but moving along and cutting out dead air would help I think.

Try enunciating a bit more. More FEELING.

Thanks for all the constructive criticism!

My ability to cut and paste bits out of the video is a bit limited at the moment, but I'm trying to work with You-Tube's native software to try for now. Its just slow since uploads take a while, and then working on stuff on a distant server is slower. I figured ten min limits how repetitive I can get, and is a good length for doing things in a single take. It also keeps the hard drive space and uploads reasonable.

I'll probably level up in episode three, which will make the combat a bit less back and forth missing a bit less common. Sound quality is harder for me, but I'll see. Fallout, being an older game, doesn't like alternate inputs, so I need to pause the game, and manually stop the recording, rather than hit a start/stop function key.

Style is still a concern for me. I can't quite keep up rapid-fire commentary like Freeman's Mind or go off topic like Splatercat.
