Discord

Postby CodexArcanum » Mon May 09, 2005 2:11 pm

Hey everyone!

About a week ago, I posted my first 24 hour attempt, Discord. If anyone has read it yet, I'd really love some feedback on it. I've gotten a few responses from a couple of my net buddies whom I forced into reading it, but I'm always lusting hungrily after more feedback.

Here's the direct link on this site:

It's been described to me as "Mage with lighter rules," which is ironic as I've never read Mage. I attribute it to basing the games on the same source material. It also bears no relation to John Wick's recently released "Discordia," which is a far supior game.

I've been reading 24 Hour games for a while before I decided to submit my own, so I'm really excited to see what the reaction is. The games I've really liked so far are:
Karbon = Good mechanics tied to a setting I found fun and interesting.
SinZen = For really intriguing design and ideas
Above the Earth = Because I was in a super hero mood and that one had some great ideas
Immaculate = For a really fun sounding concept and ideas

Anyway, that is all. Thanks!

Ah, yes. I'm particularly interested in the urban fantasy genre, so I homed in on this one as soon as it hit the site.

First, kudos on the world. I like how the background was done. Lacking in detail, true, but quite good for something that was done in 24 hours.

Second, I _really_ like the variety of Paradigms. The lack of such variety -- specifically, the unrepentently eurocentric flavor -- was my main beef with White Wolf's Mage: the Ascension.

The only thing I didn't like is the mechanics; they struck me as a tad complex. It wasn't a hate thing, though. I just would've preferred something simpler.

Thanks a bunch for the kudos, very encouraging. I think I'd like to do more work on this idea, get it expanded to something more interesting and detailed, and getting postiive feedback really encourages me to do that.

One of my biggest regrets for this project was how little I got to flesh out the setting. I really wanted to sneak in some more fiction and clean up my writing style so that it conveys the overall mood better.

I'm actually a little dissapointed in the variety of paradigms I presented. I had trouble thinking much beyond christian ideas for some reason. I would have liked to present more religious and non-religious paradigms. In Unknown Armies fashion, I had intended that a paradigm could be anything. A mage could use self-help books or sandwich making as a magic method, so long as he believes in it.

I also missed out on some more magical musings, like summoning and enchanting. I would have also liked to delve deeper into what kind of magic a given paradigm could cast and how the differences would manifest, such as how a Christian might pray for a blessing while a wicca might set-up a ritual and enchant a crystal for good luck. Stuff like that.

I'm sorry you found the mechanics too complex, I was actually aiming for a simple system, and it's probably more due to my bad writing than bad mechanics. The basic idea is that you generate successes, then spend those successes on effects in the game. It works sort of like a point-auction diceless system, but you use dice to see how many points you have.

Anyway, thanks very much for the feedback. I hope I can improve upon my existing design in such a way as to make it more pleasing to folks who enjoy what I have so far. More feedback is, of course, still very welcome.

When I get the chance (and God knows when that will be), I'll take a look at Discord and review it.
