Wolves of Mibu

Postby deadpanbob » Sat May 21, 2005 4:30 am

Working notes for a entry into the Iron Game Chef Challenge.

HISTORICAL PERIOD: Meji Restoration/Late Tokugawa Shogunate in Japan circa 1860's.

During the waning days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the Aizu clan hired the greatest swordsmen of Edo to form the Shinsengumi.

These-not-so-secret-police took on the task of routing terrorists involved in the Sonnō Jōi, or pro imerpial movement that swept Japan after the arrival of the Black Ships of American Matthew Perry.

The Shinsengumi had many duties - but one of their lesser known was to defend the Shogun against assassination by Sonnō Jōi operatives.

INGREDIENTS:
Wine
Invincible
Companion

RULES LIMITS:
User designed cards
Resolution uses colors
Dice provide 3 distinct pieces of information (maybe)

What do the players do?

They take on the role of members of this agust brotherhood - defending the Bakufu from the imperial movement. Chief among the activities will be investigating plots, tracking down and eliminating terrorists, and protecting high-ranking Shogunate lords from assassination.

Other thoughts:

This game may have rotating GM duties - and I might slant gamist with it by making it part of the current GMs job to assassinate an important official.

Questions, comments?

Cheers,

Jason

say more about the rotating-GM business... the basic premise sounds like it could really work well with a shifting narrative focus, letting the group establish different threads in the storyline. each player (doubling as a GM) would have a character that might only appear when that person wasn't the GM... this would really help to hammer in the idea of multiple story threads, as central characters ebb and flow.

Hey Jason,

This setting has tons of potential. I'm wondering what you'll use the cards for: resources like characters, plots, master-smithed swords and so on, or plot points or relationships for connecting up the plots and threats that the Shinsengumi face. Can't wait to see more.

yrs,
Em
