Possibly revisiting a game provided here

Postby madunkieg » Wed May 03, 2017 5:23 pm

Would anyone object if I produced a new version of Metropole Luxury Coffin (MLC), and tried to sell it via a fundraising site?

Yes, the rules would change, but not a lot. I'm planning on inserting a bluffing/gambling mechanic instead of the current method of using cards. This would highlight the connection between cards and money, even if the gambling isn't to win money.

The setting would have to change a little, but the overall theme of the game, zany adventures in a disastrously named coffin hotel, would remain.

There's a chance that I might not do this. Another person suggested a space opera game with a big story, but that's sort of the opposite of the rest of my game designs, which focus on the everyday lives of regular people. He also mentioned that it's better to go with something you're comfortable with, rather than risk a totally new idea. Thus, MLC.

Why not? There are a ton of games that were for sale and then became free. There are games that have free versions. Why not take a game and make a for profit version? It would seem like at least keeping some commonality would make sense so the free version is an advertisement for the for profit version.

To create a game of heroes out to save the universe was doable, but it was too far removed from the sort of game that I like making. I like making games that feature normal people just trying to get by in absurd situations. I'm not sure yet if I'll revisit MLC, but the possibility is increasing.

Thanks to both of you for your encouragement.

I say go for it! It's nice to see an older project providing inspiration to something new.

Oh, I'm definitely doing it. I've realized that it's a gamist game (of Forge/GNS theory) because it's all about tracking progress in a linear progression towards winning. The gamist genre, however, needs further development, thus...

I'm trying to design a new action resolution mechanic. It should involve cards, bluffing and betting. I also want to reduce the number of cards used in the game, because I want it to work with just a single deck. The new system will likely be inspired by a simplified version of Texas hold'em poker. I'm not sure what players would bet on, but I'll figure something out.

What's important is that the anticipation be built up through a long process, and then resolution suddenly happens, quickly transforming the anticipation into victory, fear, sorrow, or some other emotion. This is very different from narrativist games, where resolution is usually thoroughly considered, and therefore a lot slower.
