Okay, so here's how the map and the tokens interact:

The map is divided into sections (Rennes, Nantes, rivers etc). Each section has three boxes: Breton, Frank and Norman.

- At the start of the game, all tokens are in a central pool (a cup or whatever). No players have any tokens.
- After a scene, players award tokens from the pool to each other (as described above). Each player gets tokens of "his" color (so player A only gets blue ones, for instance).
- After narrating, a player may place tokens on the map. These are placed in the box of a group that player has narrated success for, in a region mentioned in narration. These tokens are taken from the player's personal pool. The first player in a turn places 1 token, next one 2, next one 3 etc.
- At the end of the game (after 10 scenes), find the victorious group in each region - the group with the most tokens. (For instance, if the Bretons have 5 tokens in Nantes, the Normans 2 and the Franks 11, the Franks win Nantes).
- Remove the tokens in the non-victorious boxes. Victorious tokens are tripled and returned to their players.

I think this game is best with four or more players. With three, it could easily become a two-against-one thing.

Also... it's getting to be more of a narrative alternative history board game than a role-playing game. Whattheheck, I still want to play it.

The Chairman has not yet commented on a specific design. The Chairman will comment on this one.

Because the Chairman loves Charlemagne. The Chairman loves Franks. The Chairman loves Charlemange's Frankish Empire. The Chairman loves watching Charlemagne's Frankish Empire fall apart because Charlemagne's heirs were stupid. Oh, and the Chairman also loves Normans.

The Chairman would love to see the victory point tokens placed on the board and scored in a manner similiar to area control boardgames like El Grande or Liberte.

As to whether it is a roleplaying game...well to the Normans all of Europe was just a giant D&D game...their sole object was to kill people and take their stuff. Therefor it would seem to me that any game with Normans in it must automatically be a role playing game...

Question

Postby nyarly » Thu May 26, 2005 1:07 am

Is there room in this game for those of us without a burning passion for 9th century European history? Granted, it ties to the theme, but I'm having trouble imagining actually playing without stumbling all over the various characters; honestly, I think I've got a vague idea about which lot the Franks and the Bretons and the Normans were, but I don't think I could tell a better story about them than I could the Ackbar-Wot of Mars. What kind of a crutch can you provide to the history challenged like me?
Pssst... lemme tell you about Repertoire - oh, merde, that's my cue.
