Your Accuser, Your Companion

Everybody on Binary Five is guilty, in the eyes of the Wardens. They want to make sure that guilt is in your eyes too.

One of your victims lives in your head. If you were a murderer, they worked up the template from recordings and testimony; if you were a rapist, they probably got the victim to model it. If you were a terrorist, they could have done either. None of the inmates are sure if it's done with hypnosis, implants, broadcasts--who knows? What matters is that the person who brought you to trial never leaves your sight and hearing.

Some Companions will try to teach you guilt, reminding you every hour of how helpless they were, how sickening your actions. Some mock you, pointing out the shame of what you endure and do now to keep going. Some say nothing: they just stand there, in corners and on ledges, and bleed.

If you ever want to accomplish something on your own on Binary Five, you'll have to defeat your Companion one way or another. It's not as easy as it sounds.

Barter

The economy is literally cutthroat on Binary Five. The three basic units of trade are, in order of increasing value: wine, humans and color.

Wine is fermented in prison toilets from the mildly poisonous blooms on the colony's ubiquitous mosses, and traded in ancient resealable plastic bags. A full bag is enough to quiet your Companion for a night, but it's also enough to induce temporary deafness and loss of muscle coordination.

Humans, as with every prison in history, often turn themselves into currency to protect their lives. Ownership of another prisoner is worth five bags of wine--six or seven if it's ownership of a newbie.

Color is unpredictable and precious, especially for those who understand how to use it for more than visual stimulation. A single piece of color may be worth one to three humans, dead or alive, depending on its scarcity. Getting caught in possession of color is worth a week in solitary confinement--but both the Wardens and the colonists know that's a slap on the wrist, and the real punishment is its confiscation.

Obligatory IGC Post

Welcome to the New World is inspired, historically, by... well, pick one. This kind of thing happens at least twice a century. But specifically, Binary Five is a synthesis of the third leg of the Triangle Trade with the sentence of transportation (to Australia or America) of British criminals in the 17th to 19th centuries and, of course, the Stalinist gulag system.
