Mythic RPG that allows for Solitaire Play

Postby Doc Halloween » Fri Apr 21, 2006 4:22 pm

Have you heard of this RPG Tool:

Mythic RPG
Create dynamic role-playing adventures without preparation
For use as a stand-alone game or as a supplement for other systems

I have been using it for 4-5 months now to play RPG's solo. It was desigened to be played solitaire (one person without a GM). Take my word for it, it works and is very very fun. You never know where your adventure will take you. You can use any genre also.

Hey all. I haven't dropped off the earth or forgotten about this challenge. Actually, what I have been doing is studying solitare game mechanics. Specifically card games. Trying to determine what things make a solitare game a fun diversion and keeps the game challenging from play to play.

My goal is to incorporate solitare card game concepts into an RPG mechanic. The end should be a game of cards which leaves you with a special feeling of having just watched a movie or read a story once you are done playing it... if you allow your imagination to think about what the cards are doing.

I am still in the stages of developing the idea. But I will let you know how far I get.

Sidetracked

Postby ErrinF » Sat Jul 08, 2006 11:03 am

I've been MIA myself... I finished all the game mechanics of my solitaire RPG, then got sidetracked with other business. If I can get back on track, my game only needs a few more weeks worth of fleshing out.

I was browsing and ran into this. I plan to give it a try. It's the sort of thing I have been shooting for:

Synopsis of Haunted Houses Solitaire rpg

Postby ErrinF » Mon Jul 17, 2006 1:55 am

Sure thing, Rob. Here's a synopsis of what will be my solitaire rpg entry:

In the Haunted Houses Solitaire RPG, the player takes the role of a seeker who seeks out haunted houses for exploration. There are 6 types of seekers: Hunters, Occultists, Holymen, Psychics, Medium, and Parapsychologists. Each seeker type has 12 'advancements', an advancement being a special skill unique to the seeker class. Hunters are skilled in hunting and fighting, Occultists are skilled in arcane spells, Holymen are skilled with holy blessings, Psychics are skilled in psychic/psionic ability, Mediums are skilled in spiritual mediation, and Parapsychologists are skilled with parapsychological technology. A seeker starts with 1 advancement, and can get the rest by accruing advance points which are gained through exploration of haunted houses. Once a seeker gains all 12 advancements of their class, they can retire or continue to explore haunted houses. If a seeker retires or perishes, the player creates another seeker that can explore new haunted houses or delve into ones past seekers have explored. Thus, the game is open ended.
Game mechanics revolve around 8 attributes: Physical, Spiritual, Investigation, Luck, Vitality, Fright, Run, and Hide. Seekers 'visit' haunted houses; A visit includes mapping the haunted house (rooms are generated randomly). Each room may contain a monster and/or a haunting (a supernatural manifestation that is not a monster), and there are even mystic items/weapons that can be found to the seeker's benefit. There will be about 20 different kinds of rooms, 40 different kinds of monsters, and 60 different kinds of hauntings, allowing for quite a bit of variation within each haunted house explored. Did I mention a monster or a haunting might pop up in a room that was previously empty? Did I mention that a seeker may perish from either Damage (physical), Trauma (spiritual), or Fear (fright)?
Haunted Houses Solitaire RPG will use my Dice Decks system which seperates a regular 52-card poker deck into two new decks: a 40-card deck of all cards 1 through 10 (1=ace) & a 12-card deck of all face cards. Both decks can then be used to accurately simulate the rolling of a d4, a d6, a d8, a d10, a d12, and a d20. These simulated dice rolls are used to determine all gameplay.
Where I'm at right now with my RPG is that I just need to determine the specifics of all the individual rooms, monsters, hauntings, and mystic items that will comprise the game. The actual rules/mechanics have all been written out, and the artwork is done too; It's the specifics of the aforementioned rooms, monsters, hauntings, and items that I need to flesh out. I'd estimate I only have a solid week's worth of work left to complete it, though my burden right now is to find the time to get that week in. Deadline for this challenge is the end of the year, but I'd like to be done much sooner than that. I'm guessing it's a matter of a month or two at this point.

You should all check out ! It's a 5 page 24 Hour RPG submission that I think really breaks some ground in the whole "solo-rpg" arena. Plus it's the first entry in 1km1kt's "Adapt a Computer Game" competition. Check it out!!
