What's your favourite RPG ever...

I'm not sure I can answer that question. I use different RPGs for different types of games, or when the mood strikes me.

Hmm... I don't believe D&D is a good roleplaying system, but the fact remains that I own a lot of sourcebooks for the new edition and I keep returning to it. Mostly because I know I'll always be able to get players for it. So maybe it's not strictly my favourite RPG, but you've got to respect a system that's become almost synonymous with the very term RPG and has become more or less universally known.

But yeah, I guess that still doesn't really answer the question...

I think the closest thing to a favourite system I have (as Rob Lang commented, "except my own"), on reflection, is The Window:



If you haven't already seen this game, you really should have. It's simple, light (very, very light) on the rules, and works for anything. This is a system where you can learn the basics in a single page.

Now in the settings versus system debate I fall into different areas.

for me SLA Industries is on of the best settings ever...totally love it...dont care so much for the sytem personally....But look and feel give me SLA Industries for total sweet factor.

I printed out The Window years ago
never did a thing with it.
I prefer more rules oriented systems personally.
I love how Interlock/Fuzion goes.
Tri-stat dX is a good system for what it is intended for.

But I am more for the settings myself......
I do tend to do more settings work than systems work.

I'm more keen on settings too (I'm having enormous fun with a setting I'm developing primarily though not exclusively for D&D use right now), but it's fun to mess around with the nuts and bolts too!

Pendragon. I can't use it for every setting, of course, (though I have tried some unusual ones!) but if I had to take one RPG onto a desert island, Pendragon would be it.

Talislanta is my favorite RPG, but again, the system.

If I were to play Talislanta again, today, I'd probably replace the rules with something extremely simple, like the PDQ system from Atomic Sock Monkey or something.

Talislanta's rules have changed a lot over the years anyway.

"Truth and Justice" which I mentioned earlier uses a varient of PDQ. It's a simple system, but it's really clean and flexible.
