Role Playing Games Don't Have to be Free.

So, I browse the internet, sample as many free RPGs as I can find... but sometimes it just feels good to put down some money and make a purchase. I love RPGs and when I see the promise of a quality hardcover limited signed edition of an RPG that's as good looking as "" well... I just have to bite.

The game mechanic is based on "" which is a free RPG and one of the best I've ever seen... and when I bought the special edition I got the PDF version immediately. Let me just say that I am not disappointed.

So... tell me, what are you spending your RPG dollars on these days... anything good?

RPG Blog was generating some positive buzz for "Artesia: Adventures in the Known World" a while back... has anyone bought it? What's the verdict?

I certainly don't want to be the one voice that keeps you from Spycraft, something you may well enjoy.
I will say that it's well written and it's presented decently. (I do take issue with there being a large number of times instances of "explained of page xxx".....Which made me start feeling that it should be a bit better organized.) I also think it's just plain pretty. There is indeed a lot of info there and could very well be the only thing you'd ever need for just about anything modern. Also, I've heard and read a number of folks who say it's better than D20 Modern, in fact the best D20 out there.
Again, don't let me cloud your judgment. I think you should do some more research to truely see if it's for you. I just don't want to stand in the way of anyone and their fun.
I noticed that you seem familier with the D20. See, I am not. This is honestly the forst D20 that I've ever attempted to read and digest. I myself could not. There was simply way too much. I mean, we're talking about a FOUR HUNDRED AND NINETY SIX PAGES!!!!
To me....my opinion...that is about four hundred pages too long....or at least three hundred too long....at least...

But anyway, there are folks that swear by it, so look into it a bit. Maybe you'd love it.

I've been putting a little money into d20 Modern. WOTC is far from my favourite company, but I'll tell you that it is damned fun to play if you're not looking for realism, and you don't mind all the useless rules. I throw down a lot of house rules myself.

I got the latest edition of Call of Cthulhu not that long ago. Other than them rearranging everything in the book since fourth edition, I love it.

I'm still trying to track down some obscure White Wolf books from back before the World of Darkness stuff, which is not nearly as much fun.

I've got my eye on a few things, I'll probably pick up d20 Dark*Matter at some point.

I'm also interested in getting some of the Iron Kingdoms books.

Last but not least I found this totally bizarre RPG just once whose name I can't recall at the moment that I am determined to track down.

EDIT: Mechanical Dreams, that's the one I wanted that's so strange.

I own Mechanical Dreams I love the setting
It is completely original I think in so many ways and the way they handle eating/mana (called orpee in the game) is completly realistic as to how i think something like that should be handled..

the look is incredible, and a totally dense book worth the weight I think..

Now to find someone to game with...
