Play by Post

Postby Khadmus » Sat May 26, 2007 7:33 am

Copied and pasted from some old thread... I would like to have this going on.

I came up with this unoriginal idea a week or two ago. I think that it might help to promote 1km1kt if we had play-by-post games going on of the games here on the site. After talking to Keeton about it, we really just need to tell him what game we would like to play. Any preferences?

Sounds good to me. I'm one of those people who likes to see the dice, test the rules in action, and bares a disinclination twords free-form play. However, we could use some more activity around here, and it would be nice to have something to do. I'm not exactly sure why it fizzled the last time we brought this up. Perhaps we should just start unoffically and see if it snowballs.

I've never run one of these - I don't know what works particularly well. Of my own games, I'd probably say Sputnik Lost is our best bet. Little focus on combat (this forum doesn't have a die roll script) minimal rules (One Page) and the semi-intermittent serial contact reinforces the theme of missing cosmonauts communicating by radio. All the others tend to be crunchy systems - D&B was more or less built to showcase a combat system I thought up for one.

Beyond that, I'm not much of one for fantasy - though I'll play what I can. SF and horror tend to be my favorites.

Did you want to run this, or should I? It shouldn't take to long for me to think of something and begin, though another player or two would be nice.

I'm not too keen on running my first game as a play-by-post. I expected players to behave themselves with die rolls (just roll and tell us) but that obviously has a chance for problems. Although I do have my preferences (mostly towards fantasy), I really don't care and will acknowledge the whims of others. Sputnik Lost is our only suggestion and it seems good.
If we are to run this, I would like to inform you that I am in school (16 years old), go to church (sunday, 10-around 12, including other engagements on sunday), and am occupied for half of saturday morning. I can post during early* morning as well.
Now to read the Sputnik Lost rules...

One mod will never work.

Postby alderneyvamp » Tue Jun 05, 2007 4:12 pm

For a play by post to work properly there are several things it needs. Firstly a website of its own, or at least a forum. I hate to say something apart from 1KM1KT would be needed but for a game with various areas such as markets, wilderness and pubs/taverns a multi topic forum would be needed.

With an independat (or sister) forum, there are programs that allow people to roll a die via coding (much like placing a text in bold) that automatically imbed within posts.

Secondly, it shouldn't be all down to one GM. The work for this moderator would be insanely hard in keeping track of any more than four or five players. A systematic moderating group would be needed, perhaps one in charge of character's buying and selling, one who runs one or more quests or one who makes sure no inappropriate language is used in the 'chat' or social areas of the game.

I, myself, would be happy to moderate for anybody or take a dual role as mod/player by running adventures or scenarios that my character just wont join in with.

Pbp

Postby caine1 » Tue Jun 05, 2007 8:05 pm

I know I'm new here but I've done a fair amount of play by post. I know I could handle mid management moderation duties. I only want to make sure there are dedicated members who want to play every week or so.

Until a forum can be generated If you're dying for some PBP, I have a game I'm developing that is enhanced PBP...

Are we talking about literally play-by-mail, as opposed to play-by-e-mail? If so, I'm all for it.

I've just started a thread in the Play by Post section that is detailing what I want to do.

When I talk about Play by Post I mean that you register on a forum (like this one) and you play by replying to messages that moderators and other players leave. Any private actions that other player should not be able to read (sneaking, stealing, whispering) can be done by PM.

Hope to get this started soon.

So this is not PBM but PBEM? We aren't writing letters we're responding by to something posted on the website by the game referee, by writing at the site (like I'm doing right now)? Have only done this once, a couple of years ago, and it got way too laborious for the referee but it was fun while it lasted. So, if you-all are up for it then I am too...tell me what machinations to do to plug into whatever game you want to play.
