Has anyone ever played a system AS IS?

tweaks

now I tend to very few changes to any game system I play. Change settings more than systems.

1st Ed AD&D we added in that Rangers get, same as Rogues, Move Silent Hide in Shadows only in the woods, etc.
Added in that you could take Ranger view Fighter on the way to Bard. Those were it I think.

None for 2nd Edition other than trying to smooth out Secondary Occupation a little.
3.0/3.5/Modern I just blend

Hero System is stock as is. Only limits are soft such as starting out no more than about 20 total Defenses, keep it appropriate etc. More a touch of the playing group dynamics than anything else.

Most games I'm willing to give a shot - but it must be said, that I got into game design after giving a total overhaul to Paladium's rule system.

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is pretty good as it. New World of Darkness isn't half bad either - though that was played with mods when I got the chance to use it. (Actually it was old WoD Orpheus, updated to nWoD, with additional changes like using multiple horrors at once.) The good editions of Paranoia work as well.

Several of my anime games work without mods - but then again, they're presented as universal systems with a list of powers - so every game is a mod technically...

While there might be some other games, part of the point is that you shouldn't be running things straight out of the book anyway. You probably don't have the same circle of friends as the author - so you are going to have different expectations and goals.

I don't modify systems all that much (though I did once try to graft Deadlands' wound system onto d6 Star Wars) but I modify the hell out of settings. All the freakin' time - I just can't leave 'em alone.

I think RPGs should be written with this in mind - leave a little open for the GM to tinker with. That way, a game can be tailored to truly fit the group.
