I like the idea of giving someone more than one chance. It does improve the chances for the players and at the same time it isn't really a numeric system.

How would the keep count of how many goes they get?

One draw is the basic/hard difficulty. Beyond that depends on how characters are built. Will there be classes, skills, and/or tools? Are we rewarding the players acting, or the character's attributes?

On one hand, we could just have a book keeping tool (either a sheet, or more climatically, a pile of objects like spears (ie toothpicks)/coins/shields etc) and it is traded for the extra draw. Playing to type/alignment adds to this pool. In other worlds, a wizard can fight as well as a Sheppard, but acting out your roll will give you more chances to draw. For short, this is the DfP - Draw from Pool method.

Alternately, for each "Noun" or "adjective" they have (applicable skill, item etc) is one extra draw. So a Viking with his ax gets 3 draws in a fight, two draws when making a fire (basic + ax for wood chopping) and only one attempt when riding a motorcycle. (But if he succeeds, Thor will be pleased!) The shorthand form might be DfD - Draw from Description.

As another idea (not necessarily combined with the above) could the system work with just a bag of nouns/adjectives while instead of skills/attributes each character has verbs?

first off I can't wait till me net is working better so I can anwser this as its posted.....

I think chainsaw has the idea down folks....

yes nouns, verbs, and discriptors (as adverbs may be needed too) But I'm still set on the idea that the chits pulled have one of each on them as to both shink the number in the pot and avoid the problem of (damn it I have red, run, and giggly...what can I make with that?) at the same time if we seperate them there is a better chance of Failure.....hmmm

I still think the interupt points should be sepret (god I miss my spell checker...damn library comp.) I think that what clases will do is add to pull abilities, for the wizard the "wo extra discriptors" may not work but "pull an extra chit on all knowledge based actions" might be better.

As to magic, since i was thinking of building a open system (aka the hero sysem, gurps, fudge) magic is going to be needed and I like where your going chainsaw.

as it stands the same points used to interupt would be good double up as re-pulling chances. getting them back at each game setion

classes= maybe.... skill= yes...tools= yes.....

Idea= each weapon has a amount of chits pulled and placed towards damage.... Ajectives and verbs only needed....you have a "weak red" mark to your back and your leg is "weeping and blue"...just a thought

and finally I think DfD is better then DfP....makes more sense for a langue point of view... "why is an ax helping him swim?"

Thanks for the nudge, Kuma!

I think skills, stats, attributes and all that stuff should be a series of words you always get to use to build the sentance. A character class could be just a list of words you're allowed to choose your skills from. You can have a big list (or suggest your own) for people to choose from. I don't think levels work so well because this is not a long campaign sort of system.

For example:

Fighter
Smash, Stab, Block

Thief
Sneak, Distract, Barge

I can see where attributees being "free" words could work....but to make it a total rule (aka used for stats, skill, class) would degrade the point of this game. Levels never real sounded like a great idea I perfer the spent xp method...I disagree on the not a long campaign thing though.
