question as far as rules go. It says on the 24 hour rpg website that the goals is to produce something that is aproximately 24 pages in length. Is this a cap, or is it flexible? Also, should i add things like, cover page, table of contents, character sheets, and an appendix with tables for easy access and checking up on things, does that count as part of the 24 pages, or is it outside them?

Thanks

The goal is to produce a 24 page book. It's not a cap by any measure, just a target. Almost none of the 24 hour games out there hit that mark, and it's up to you to decide how you want to count pages. I'm counting my cover, OGL, and character sheet as pages.

24 pages happens to be about the minimum you can get printed professionally for saddle stitching without it looking like a couple of pages stapled together.

The length and layout is quite flexible. Most games don't make it to 24 pages (seven to ten is about average), so consider it goal, not a cap. Similarly - many of the games lack indexes and the like due to the short length and time. Including contents, graphics, fancy backgrounds etc. is an achievement.

The current challenge mentions the inclusion of NPCs etc. precisely because going that far is rather rare in prior games. They're still more for "bonus points" (not that scores matter) than a mandate. However, you don't need an official declaration to test yourself with a 24 hour game and can do so at anytime.

Just keep in mind, the ultimate goal is to prove you can get the task done, and make something out of an idea you've had. Making it pretty or cross-referenced is far less important than making it worth playing. Elements that are just eating up space - like a full page of contents or a montage gallery won't help.

What a Relief

Postby shinobicow » Mon May 04, 2009 8:49 pm

Thank the lord for that... i'm already clocked in at 25 pages with the tables and i know that its going to be a bit longer once i add in more stuff. Hope this all comes together. I've still got more than half my time left, so i think i'll be all right. No rest for the wicked.

O and i officially love Microsfot Clip-art! ;)

Wow. I'm at 19 pages now, and I was considering that a major coup. And on top of that I took a cheat from Phil Reed's original 24 hour RPG and used a digest sized page so each page is actually only about half a "real" page of content.

Admittedly there is no art in my design so I've been forced to be very... creative... with my layout to make it not just blur into one giant block of text.

Anyways, I have to go to bed (there's a lovely girl in the next room asking why I'm still on the computer). I'll try to write the sample setting and adventure in the morning before posting the finished product.

Well, i'm using lots of tables and those take up a bunch of room. The only reason that i have time to do this is because my girlfriend is off at her house in Nagano until later today when she comes back to the city. Hopefully i can get it done before then... but i think we don't have plans to meet till tomorrow, so i think i'm all good.

Keep going, shinobicow, you know it's going to be worth it at the end. Challenges that are easy cease to be challenges!
