Competition idea: Mod-a-Game

Postby Groffa » Wed Aug 24, 2011 12:35 pm

(I haven't searched the forums, so it's possible this idea already exists somewhere in the vaults.)

Do you think it would be manageable/fun to have a Mod-a-Game competition. That is, given a fixed time frame (like the 24 hour competition), find and modify an existing free game (I'm thinking Creative Commons BY-SA maybe?) into something that's still close to the original but at the same time something new.

How about each contestant chooses a game to modify first, and then is assigned (randomly) two or three themes from a predetermined list of themes (like the latest 24 hour comp.).

Thoughts? Feasible or completely bonkers?

I think in order for this to work right, you'd need to have every one us the same game.

In that case, I think we should find the most unknown, most abandoned little* free** game to modify, so as to bring it into the light again.

*little as in "under 10 pages of rules"
**free as in "free and you're allowed to modify it".

I am completely on-board for the people's glorious redistribution of concepts.

I believe we have considered this idea before. There are certainly some games in the 1km1kt archive that deserve to see the light of day again.

However, we also seemed to pass on the idea before as well. At the moment i can't remember why, but it might have been a matter of getting permission, coupled with the different degree any given game needs alterations.

I don't think we would need to even add a second element to the competition. Just find a game that needs more love, and write. We can look at who manages to keep the tone, adds the most to the setting, or turns it into something new.

We could have like a "supplement-a-game" thing like Aardvark seems to be suggesting. It'd be fun to revive old classics (1km1kt got me into tabletop gaming beyond Shadowrun, after all), and I've seen some great games that could be even more awesome with some more attention.

Anyone remember an old superhero game on 1km1kt? I don't really remember anything about it, other than it being maybe 4 years old? My brother and I had crazy adventures with it.

We've got a number of hero games - can you narrow it down a bit?

  • Have A Go Heroes (Mystery Men)
  • Above the Earth
  • Sunrise 24 (X-Men)
  • Simple Supers
  • Hi/Lo Heroes
  • My Hero (Resolution through artwork)
  • Crime Fighter
  • Of G-Men and Supermen
  • Powers Brawl
  • Price of Power (One of my Favorites)
  • Sky Ace (Minitures game)
  • EZ Supers
  • Team Steel on Trial
  • Dungeons and Vigilantes

Yes, I somehow became the unofficial 1km1kt.net back up and index. I think this may be an argument to go back through the archives and start adding tags, or a new organization system. There are 500+ games here you know.

Another idea for the contest - make a description or advertisement for a game, to make people believe its worth sorting through the archives. I don't think I'd force anyone to make a 30 second pitch on you-tube, but say first page of the entry is an ad from a gaming 'zine or poster. (Bonus points if it looks like the old copy from the back of a D&D book or Dragon magazine?) From there, revisions, adventures, or characters can be added.

Without looking at any of them, the art game sounds like the winner.
I also do this which isn't much, but it's enough for me.
