Anyone a boardgamer as well?

Postby Praetorian » Sun Feb 06, 2005 8:33 pm

If you are- you really need to check out the products Fantasy Flight Games is producing.

They recently came out with the magnificent War of the Ring. WotR is a grea game- lots of nifty fiddly bits, good rules, and some great gameplay. Really, really worth the price.

The real kicker is the 3rd edition of Twilight Imperium. I have yet to buy this beauty... but, well, look here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ti3.html

This looks liker it is going to be the game of space conquest for the tabletop. I can't wait to get it- but with a $80 price tag... it is not for the light hearted.

So, anyone else out there like boardgames?

Absolutely. I've done a lot of rules customization with Twilight Creations Zombies!!! boardgame, and the group still plays Cosmic Encounter, Frag!, Nuclear War (well, that's really more of a card game), Kingmaker and Talisman off and on as pick ups. Risk still comes out every once in a while, and I do boardgame stuff with my students all the time (lots of checker/chess variants as well as stuff of my own/student creation as well as variations of commercial stuff, like from Cheapass Games).

I have to agree on FF Games. Nice stuff! I still want to pick up Ogre Cave. There's also one about a Dragon Hoard (or rather escaping with a Dragon's hoard) with tiles that looked good. Can't remember the name. Both were by Tom Jolly though, if I remember correctly. Speaking of Tom, Wiz-War is also awesome if you can find it.

I also like card games. Not the collectable kind - the self contained variety. Favorites currently include "Before I Kill You Mr. Bond" (Cheapass), "Graverobbers from Outer Space" (Z-Man), and "Lunch Money" (Atlas). I dabble in these, too. Easy to make with your printer and sheets of perforated business cards.

As far as "light" card style games- I cannot suggest Colossal Arena enough. Reprinted by FFG it isa great multi-player game- especially the bidding sequence where strategy plays vdifferently from each phase of the game (forcing players to be flexible and creative). Really good looking cards as well.

The king is War of the Ring, however. It is such a beautiful game. Great (in-depth_ rules, amazing pieces, amazing playing boards, great cards. There is honestly nothing wronmg with this game (and the fact that it can be played with 2-4 player- my poptimum number- is bonus).

My favorite board game session of all time was playing Supremacy all night with my friends in an RV until the game degenerated (at about 7am) into the detonation of all country owned nukes on home soil resulting in nuclear winter and assuring that there would be no victor.

And now I'm all grown up :?

Mmm. Supremacy. I used to play in college with a group of about 10 other honors students. We had access to the honor house and on long weekends we would reserve the house and play marathon 72-hour games. They were absolutely epic with all the supplements in use. Each player had a binder of rules in front of them.

Some of the most intense board game diplomacy game out of that game...

In one game that I remember I was Australia/Ocenaia and was loosely liied with the Chinese. The African union had been fighting a slowly losing battle with the USA. Near the end the Africans came to me and asked for me help- which I gave to bring the Africans into our Asian alliance. I dropped 3 divisions of crack Australian troops on Alaska. The US had all their assest tied up in the African war and I had cut off their reserves of oil- strading the US units and allowing the Africans to mount a counter-attack. Beautiful.

On off days our gaming group, usually opts for board games. The usual options are Lunch Money, Munchkin, and Gloom. But our favorite is Carcassonne in its many incarnations

Lately, my friends and I have been playing a lot of War of the Ring by Fantasty Flight games. It is really quite a good game- with good balance (though vastly different play styles). There is a supplement slated for release- so I am pretty keen on getting that.

I'm a big fan of Risk and its more in-depth variants (Risk 2210 is my favourite). Sid Meier's Civilization from Eagle Games is pretty good but a little vague on some of the rules. I also have something of an oddity - a French reprint of Civilization, the original boardgame that SMC was based on. I also play a lot of Munchkin (the card game).

Who has time for boardgames? If I had the time I'd play 'em. Ah, Risk is an old favorite.
