The 24 hour RPG Project is basically the budding and professional game designer’s equivalent of a triathalon- You put your body, mind and spirit through some major punishment in a race against time, in this case to develop a full, working, playable role-playing game within a mere 24 hours with other peers. Like a triathalon, there’s no “award” for winning; Rather the award is in itself to participate, test yourself, overcome the challenge at hand at your own pace and skill level, and share in the brief glory with your peers. Queen of Thorns

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

She is the pride of your village, a young woman gifted with beauty, grace, and a gentle spirit. Now she’s gone – cruelly taken by the minions of the Queen of Thorns to their mistresses’ dungeon. There she will stay chained until the new moon comes, and with it the dark ritual to preserve the Queen’s haughty beauty at the expense of a young maid’s lifeblood. And it is all your fault . . .

You and your companions would not heed the elders’€™ warnings. You would not accept the dark fate intended for her, you could not live under the shadow of your guilt if you did nothing. Instead, you took up what weapons and other items you have and struck out toward the bastion of the Queen of Thorns.

The hulking shape of the Queen’s fortress is on the horizon. You look to your impromptu company and take heart knowing you will not be going into that damned place alone.

Meanwhile, she lies in the Queen’s dungeon, imprisoned by twisted chains of thorns that tear at her flesh. She weeps, bereft of everything except a faint glimmer of hope.

The Strongest Link

Monday, April 4th, 2011

The Strongest Link is a game that examines how we make decisions in a group setting. Political in nature, the rules are simple (nine pages total) but work to recreate groups from government to movie studio executives to your average gaming group.

You decide the setting, your individual character’s motivation and direction he’d like to take the group, and then play with your friends through four rounds of debate and vote-casting to ultimately choose who has the best idea (or strongest motivation/force of will) for the group to execute.

Spade vs. Indy

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Created for the 2011 24 Hour RPG Project “Movie Mashup”.

“Spade vs. Indy” pits two archetypical characters against each other – a hard-knuckled professor of archaeology and an evenly hard-knuckled private eye. This deceitful, backstabby game inherits the effective pulp storytelling of Indiana Jones and the dense, dark noir atmosphere of The Maltese Falcon. With playing card-based game mechanics.
