24 Hour RPG

1KM1KT is the official mirror site for 24HourRPG.com. Project participants may submit their work for online publication and view archived 24 Hour RPG submissions.

The 24 hour RPG Project is basically the budding and professional game designer’s equivalent of a triathalon- You put your body, mind and spirit through some major punishment in a race against time, in this case to develop a full, working, playable role-playing game within a mere 24 hours with other peers. Like a triathalon, there’s no “award” for winning; Rather the award is in itself to participate, test yourself, overcome the challenge at hand at your own pace and skill level, and share in the brief glory with your peers. Dr Keeton’s Machine

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Written for the 2012 24-hour RPG contest. It is a Victorian-Steampunk era RPG taking place inside a computer. It uses a relatively simple D20 combat system, and is best for one-shots.

There is almost no pre-game accounting, so you can dive in almost immeadiately.

Running with the Dead

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Running with the dead is an entry to the 1km1kt 24hr RPG contest. This year’s flavour is a Movie Mashup competition. There is an extensive list of movies to choose from, all of them very good ones!

I’d decided not to choose before hand, but select two at the beginning of the 24hr period. Some called this “going in cold like an echo”. However the truth is, I’m so busy with work, study, fatherhood and everything else life throws at you, I decided not to pressure myself with the competition, until I was ready to do it.

I present to you; Running with the dead, a mash up of Blade Runner and Dusk till dawn.

I don’t intend to adhere strictly to the source material. I consider it inspiration. Almost like a ronnies competition. This game is inspired by the movies and not a deliberate attempt to fuse them wholesale.

Inside you’ll find the setting, the rules and a sample adventure. I hope you have fun.

Feedback is encouraged and should be delivered to 1km1kt.net/forum

Princes of Arabia

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

We are thieves, rulers of the streets. Ours is the world. We are the Princes of Arabia.

This game was written for the 24 Hour RPG Movie Mashup Competition hosted in 1KM1KT. The idea was to mix two movies and make a game out of it. I picked Aladdin and Riders of the Lost Ark. From this movies came the idea of tomb riders in a fantastic version of ancient middle east, getting into trouble to find treasures protected by genies.

Necronautica

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Necronautica is a short role playing game of brave heroes and heroines who have taken up arms against unfathomable alien forces from beyond space and time that threaten the human race and, indeed, the very fabric of reality itself. It is also my first attempt at a 24-Hour RPG since the Summer of 2004 – that is, Necronautica was designed, written, and laid out in 24 hours (so expect a few mistakes).

The Droog Family Songbook

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011
I posted in the original mashup thread when I started and finished this. The Droog Family Songbook is a mashup of A Clockwork Orange and The Sound of Music. Yeah, that’s right. I had a blast writing this!
I would appreciate feedback and comments. I also ramble quite extensively about my goals for the game and creation process on my website. Happy for comments to that post to come here. Website is here: http://perilplanet.com

Beholden

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

This is a game about harsh mistreatment of a man chasing his dream.

What “Beholden” is:

– A diceless solo RPG.

– An entry in the April 2011 Ronnies, using the terms “chains” and “queen”.

– A (_____) of Ben Lehman’s game “Beloved”. Choose your preferred term from the list: recontextualization; inversion; retelling; pastiche; critique.  The draft of Beloved that Beholden is based on can be found here: http://www.indie-rpgs.com/forge/index.php?topic1271.0

– A direct response to Beloved, and a dialogue starter.

What it is not:

– Original.  I wrote it, but it would not exist without Ben’s game.

– An “expansion” or “mod”.  Beholden is fully self-contained.

– A challenge to the value of the source game.

Within My Clutches

Tales of Lust

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Sleeping within the darkness of ruined castles clinging to a mountain peak, howling within the woods, eerie lights luring travellers to their deaths in the swampland and fair and cruel riders on black steeds; amongst these you count yourself. You’re a nightmare creature, naught but a monster within a fairytale told countless times across the lands; a nightmare creature chained to a fate worse than death by the power of words. With each telling of your tale, of the town surviving the darkest creatures thrown at it through sheer tenacity, you are put through the motions and must once more prey on mortals, once more battle with the other evils. But even a monster can wish for something better than chains of words and bestial lusts.

You know that with each telling, with each battle with heroes and other monsters, the tale changes and takes new turns. And one day that winding tale might just bring you freedom.
